SGML Resources
Here is a list of SGML resources prepared for the CETH workshop
"Introduction to SGML".
SGML-aware software
Here are the software applications which were discussed during the workshop. For each
category, they are listed from cheaper (which can mean free in some cases) to more
expensive.
To create SGML documents:
- Emacs for Windows:
Includes a basic SGML mode.
- PSGML: A more
sophisticated SGML mode that you can add to Emacs.
- SP: An SGML toolkit which includes the
SGML parser NSGMLS. If you use Emacs to edit your SGML documents, you will need to use a
parser like NSGMLS to validate them.
- WordPerfect:
Recent versions of WordPerfect include an SGML module. Here is
a
description of this module.

A few books on SGML
- ABCD...SGML: A User's Guide to Structured Information, by Liora Alschuler
(International Thomson Computer Press, 1996): A great introduction to SGML from the
management perspective: Who uses SGML in the industry and why? How do you manage an
SGML-based project? Which types of SGML-tools are available? (Caution: does not cover the
nitty-gritty technical details.)
- Practical SGML, by Eric van Herwijnen (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1994): An
introduction to SGML for people who want to start to actually create SGML documents.
Includes a thorough description of SGML's syntax.
- The SGML FAQ Book, understanding the Foundation of HTML and XML, by Steven J.
DeRose (Kluwer Academic Publisher, 1997): answers most questions that will arise from
actually working with SGML. Includes numerous tips and tricks which should allow you to
master the most obscure details of SGML. An excellent supplement to "Practical
SGML".
- Developing SGML DTDs, from text to model to markup, by Eve Maler & Jeanne El
Andaloussi (Prentice Hall PTR, 1996): All about developing your own DTDs.
